NTL BASEBALL: CANTON KNOCKS OFF SAYRE, 10-2 (2019-05-09)

SAYRE — Canton kept its playoff hopes alive, trimming Sayre’s lead atop the NTL Small School Division standings to one game with a 10-2 win here Thursday afternoon in baseball action on Ralph Hendershot Field at Riverfront Park.
The Redskins (8-8 overall) falls to 7-5 in divisional play — one game ahead of Canton and Cowanesque Valley — both 6-6 — with two games remaining to play.
Canton took an early 1-0 lead with three consecutive two-out singles, the final one by Brendan Matthews to plate Michael Smithers. Ben Knapp stroked a one-out RBI single in the third inning to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
The Warriors took firm control of the game in the fourth inning. Cameron Bellows provided the crucial blow with a three-run double, and Knapp added a run-scoring single to push the lead to 7-0.
Junior Camden Wheeler stroked a two-run single in he bottom of the fifth inning to put Sayre on the board, but the Warriors answered with three runs in the top of the sixth.
Sophomore Zach Moore rapped out three hits, and sophomore Nic Ficarro had two hits to pace Sayre at the plate, while Wheeler singled and drove in two run, Kannon VanDuzer added a single, and juniors Gavin Blair and Corbin Brown each scored a run.
Moore was tagged with the loss, allowing seven runs — three earned — on 10 hits, while striking out three and walking one.
Freshman David Northrup allowed one hit and struck out two in 1 2/3 innings of hit relief, and freshman Mason Houseknecht struck out one in 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief.
Bellows doubled and singled, scored three runs, and drove in three runs, and Knapp singled twice, scored one run, and drove in two runs to lead Canton at the plate.
Byron Marnati earned the win for Canton, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings, while striking out one and walking two.
Sayre hosts NEB Friday.
