WAVERLY — Junior Ethan Stotler pitched in and out of trouble, scattering eight hits over seven innings, and leading Waverly to a 3-1 win over Corning here Saturday in non-league baseball action.

Corning had just one runner reach base in the first two inning, then scored a run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead, but stranded runners on second and third base.

The Hawks, who stranded nine runners in the game, also left runners in scoring position in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings.

Corning kept Waverly off the board until the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, junior Jalen McCarty walked and senior Colby Sindoni reached base on a bunt single. Later in the inning, McCarty scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Montana Davis to tie the game at 1-1.

In the home half of the sixth inning, freshman Caden Hollywood reached base on an infield single, and moved to second on a single to center field by senior Cole Jenner. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by 7th-grader Joey Tomasso.

With two outs, Hollywood scampered home on a wild pitch to give the Wolverines a 2-1 lead. A few pitches later, McCarty reached base on an error that allowed Jenner to score, pushing the lead to 3-1.

The Hawks put runners on first and second with one out in the top of the seventh, but Stotler induced a groundball to Hollywood at first base, and a line drive to McCarty at shortstop.

Stotler struck out four and walked none, while throwing 95 pitches in the complete-game victory.

Jenner stroked a pair of singled and scored one run,, while Hollywood singled and scored one run, Sindoni added a single, and Davis drove in one run.

Waverly, 12-6, returns to action Wednesday against Lansing in the IAC semifinals at Tompkins-Cortland Community College. Game time is 5 p.m.
