CONKLIN — State-ranked Susquehanna Valley poured eight runs across the plate in the home half of the first inning, and cruised to an 11-1 six-inning win over Waverly here Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the Section IV, Class B baseball playoffs.
“SV is a well-oiled machine that has a strong chance to win the Section IV title,” said Waverly coach Kyle McDuffee. “They hit the ball well, played solid defense, and their pitcher pounded the strike zone.”
McDuffee noted his team played hard until the final out.
“I appreciated how hard we we worked from first out to the last out,” he said. “Our kids hustled on every play.”
Josh Rudock pitched a two-hitter for the Sabers, ranked third in Class B. He struck out five and walked one in six innings of work.
McDuffee said the Wolverines suffered a bit of bad luck as well.
“We hit the ball hard, but it went right at them,” he said.
Jalen McCarty led off the game with a single for the Wolverines, whose only other hit in the game was a one-out RBI double by freshman Caden Hollywood in the top of the fourth inning.
Susquehanna Valley took a quick 1-0 lead on a one-out single by Logan Haskell and a line-drive RBI double by Dan Matthews.
After a walk and an error loaded the bases, Devin Hamm cleared the bases with a three-run double to extend the lead to 4-0.
With two outs, Rudock and Alex Knewasser stroked RBI singles, and Haskell capped the rally with two-run double to make it 8-0.
Haskell added a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, and two batters later, Zach Taro finished off the scoring with a two-run home run.
Waverly finishes off the 2019 campaign with a 15-7 record.
