NEW YORK STATE GIRLS GOLF: WAVERLY'S ALEX TOMASSO TIED FOR 20TH AFTER DAY 1 AT STATES (2019-06-01)

BROCKPORT — Waverly senior Alex Tomasso is tied for 20th after Day 1 of the New York State girls golf championships here at Deerfield Country Club.
The top of the leaderboard looks much the same as it did last year as defending state champion Melanie Green, a junior at Medina High, shot an even-par round 72 on the 6,108-yard course.
Unadilla Valley 8th-grader Bailey Shoemaker, last year’s runner-up is one stroke off the lead after a round of 73, while last year’s third-place finisher Alice Hodge of Ursuline is in third with a 76, and last year’s fourth-place finisher Kaitlyn Lee of Scarsdale, a former state champion, is in fourth with a 78.
Alex Tomasso is in a four-way tie for 20th place, along with Horseheads’ Emily Gresham, after shooting an opening-day round of 85.
Tomasso, who is playing in her sixth state tournament, had her best finish last year at the Bethpage Yellow Course on Long Island. She finished tied for 28th with a two-day total of 171 (85-86).
Waverly sophomore Sidney Tomasso is in a six-way tie for 63rd place after a round of 98. She finished tied for 58th last year with a two-day total of 186 (92-94).
The Lady Wolverines are also competing for the team title after winning their fourth consecutive Section IV title.
Sophomore Haley Kittle shot a 119, while sophomore Gretchen Sowle carded a 139, and senior Lauren Newman tacked on a non-scoring round of 143.
Round 2 action begins at 9 a.m.
