NTL BOYS BASKETBALL: WELLSBORO ROLLS OVER SAYRE, 73-33 (2019-01-09)

SAYRE - Sayre scored the first bucket of the game, but it was all downhill from there in Wellsboro's 73-33 win here Wednesday night in NTL boys basketball action.

Junior Ethan Miller gave Sayre a quick 2-0 lead, but Brandyn Tuttle, Joe Grab, and Andrew Brelo combined to score the next 10 points to give the Green Hornets a 10-2 lead midway through the first quarter.

Senior Gage Carnrike stopped the run wth a driving lay-up, and junior Corbin Brown scored a pair of buckets, sandwiched around a score by Tuttle, to trim the deficit to 12-8 with 1:30 remaining in the first quarter.

Wellsboro closed out the quarter with a 6-2 spurt to take an 18-10 lead after the first eight minutes, then scored the first seven points in the second quarter to extend the advantage to 25-10.

Brown knocked down a jumper to make it 25-12, but the Hornets closed out the half with a 16-4 blitz to take a 41-16 lead into the intermission.

Wellsboro stretched its lead to 31 points after the third quarter, and closed the game with a 12-2 run.

Freshman Matt Lane led Sayre with seven points, while Brown had six points, three rebounds, three assists, and one blocked shot, Carnrike had six points, three rebounds, and one block, and Miller chipped in with four points. Sophomore Zach Belles chipped in with three rebounds, and senior James Esposito notched three steals.

Tuttle scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to lead Wellsboro, while Grab had 16 points, five steals, three rebounds, and three assists, and Hunter Brown added 11 points and seven boards.

Sayre, now 1-8, returns to action Friday night at Troy.
