Valley Sports ReportSAYRE - On Monday, Canton upset North Penn-Mansfield on its home floor to allow Sayre to take sole possession of first place in the NTL Small School Division title chase.
On Wednesday, seniors Stephanie Klovekorn and Camry Lane, and junior Emily Sutryk made sure there would be no repeat here, scoring all of Sayre's points in a 48-33 win over the Lady Warriors that clinched a share of the division title.
"Canton is playing very good ball right now," said Sayre coach Eileen Sparduti. "I'm not surprised that they could upset anybody. You better bring your ‘A game.'
"We showed our ‘A game' in enough spurts to pull ahead and fend them off," she noted. "Cam, Emily, and Steph carried the scoring tonight, but we are going to need more support from others as we move forward. They are getting shots off but just not hitting.
"We still have our hands on the steering wheel to determine our own fate," added Sparduti. The Lady Redskins can clinch the division title Friday when it hosts NEB in its regular-season finale.
Klovekorn and Lane scored five points in the first quarter, and Sutryk canned a 3-pointer to lead Sayre to a 13-9 lead after the first eight minutes.
Lane and Klovekorn each knocked down a 3-pointer and scored five points apiece as Sayre added two points to its lead, taking a 23-17 lead into the halftime intermission.
Sutryk pumped in nine points, including her second 3-pointer of the game, in the third quarter, and Klovekorn added four points in a 15-8 spurt that put the Lady Redskins ahead 38-25 heading into the final eight minutes.
Klovekorn led Sayre with 18 points, 14 rebounds, and four assists, while Lane had 16 points, six rebounds, and five assists, Sutryk added 14 points, three rebounds, and three steals, sophomore Gabbi Randall chipped in with six rebounds and three steals.
Tamara Hess led Canton with 14 points.
Sayre improves to 16-5 with the win.
