IAC SOFTBALL: HAMMOND SLAMS TWO HOME RUNS IN ONE INNING, RECORD 100TH CAREER HIT; WAVERLY ROUTS WATKINS GLEN, 18-0 (2019-04-10)

WAVERLY "" Senior Wendi Hammond was 4-for-4, including two home runs and her 100th career hit, to power Waverly to an 18-0 five-inning win over Watkins Glen here Wednesday afternoon in IAC Division 3 softball action.

Waverly scored six runs in the first inning, and eight runs in the third inning, and Hammond had two hits in both rallies. Sophomore Hali Jenner and junior Paige Lewis also had two hits in the third inning.

After striking out the side in the top of the first inning, Hammond led off the home half of the first frame with a booming triple to center field, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jenner.

With two out and two on, junior Morgan Lee worked a walk to load the bases, and junior Morgan Adams delivered a two-run double to make it 4-0. Senior Kari VanAllen added an RBI single, and Hammond capped the scoring with an RBI single.

Hammond struck out the side in order in the second inning, and juniors Riley Hall and Paige Lewis hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the bottom of the frame to extend the lead to 7-0.

Hammond led off the bottom of the third inning with a home run to make it 8-0, and Jenner slammed a double to left field on the next pitch. After a walk to Hall, Lewis hit a two-run double to right field to push the lead to 10-0.

Later in the inning, Adams plated a run with a fielder's choice groundout, and Hammond belted her second home run of the inning - a grand slam to center field - to make it 15-0.

The Lady Wolverines tacked on three runs in the home half of the fourth inning on consecutive RBI singles by Jenner, Hall, and junior Adrianah Clinton.

Hammond earned the win, allowing just one hit in three innings, while striking out eight and walking none. Jenner finished off the game, allowing one hit, while striking out five and walking one in two innings.

Hammond, who had two home runs - her third and fourth of the season, a triple and a single, scored three runs, and had six RBI, while Jenner had three hits, including a pair of doubles, one run scored, and two RBI, and Adams doubled and singled, scored three runs, and drove in four runs to lead Waverly's 16-hit attack.

Lewis belted a pair of doubles, scored two runs, and had three RBI for the Lady Wolverins, while Hall doubled and singled, scored three runs, and drove in a run, and Clinton singled twice and knocked in a run.

Morgan Lee singled and scored two runs in the win, while VanAllen singled, scored one run, and drove in a run, and senior Sydney Meyers, junior Megan Lee, and sophomore Alyssa Sindoni each scored a run.

Waverly, now 7-1, returns to action Friday when it hosts Dryden.
