DISTRICT 6 LITTLE LEAGUE (MAJORS): HORNELL THUMPS WAVERLY, 14-4 (2019-07-02)

Valley Sports Report
HORNELL — Waverly jumped out to a pair of early leads, but Hornell poured it on in the final 2 1/2 innings in a 14-4 four-inning win here Tuesday in pool play action in the District 6 Little League baseball playoffs.

Waverly took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Hornell error, but a Waverly miscue in the home half of the frame helped Hornell tie the game at 1-1.

Carter Davies led off the second inning with a single and scored on a two-out RBI single by Kohen Hugo. Waverly later extended its lead to 3-1 on a wild pitch that allowed Jerry Carnrike, who had reached on an error, to score.

Hornell turned four walks and two errors, as well as two hits, into six runs in the home half of the inning to take the lead for good, at 7-3.

Lincoln Sharpsteen led off the third with a double, and scored on a groundout off the bat of Davies to trim the deficit to 7-4, but that was all the offense Waverly would muster.

Hornell scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning, and five more in the fourth to close the game out via the 10-run “mercy” rule.

Sharpsteen and Ben Shaw each doubled and scored one run to pace Waverly’s five-hit attack, while Hugo and Davies each singled and drove in one run, Peyton Robinson singled and scored one run, and Carnrike scored one run.

Davies was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs — all unearned — on no hits, while walking three and striking out three in 1 1/3 innings of work in the start.

Waverly, which lost three straight to finish pool play at 2-4, receives a bye in the final round of pool play Wednesday, and returns to action Friday in the quarterfinals of bracket play.
