Valley Sports Report
WATKINS GLEN "" Isaac McIlroy and Collin Gaylord scored two goals apiece in the first half to power Watkins Glen to a 5-0 win over Waverly here Tuesday afternoon in IAC South Large School Division boys soccer action.
Waverly coach Eric Ryck said the Wolverines had opportunities to turn the tide of the game, but Watkins Glen snatched it away each time.
"These boys are working their tails off and luck just doesn't seem to be on our side," he said. "Even when we make the right decision, it ends up somehow going the other team's way.
"We had two penalty kicks and a point-blank shot on a wide-open goal, and somehow couldn't put the ball in the back of the net," noted Ryck. "Their keeper made two really good saves, and instead of a momentum swing in our favor it ended up in their favor."
McIlroy opened the scoring in the 19th minute to give the Senecas a 1-0 lead, then scored again in the 30th minute to make it 2-0.
Morse scored his goals in a four-minute span to extend the lead to 4-0 with 2 minutes remaining in the first half.
"We came out really good, had some opportunities," said Ryck. "We were making great passes and moving the ball, then we gave up a goal early and the flood gates opened."
McIlroy capped his hat trick with 16 minutes remaining in the contest.
"I am really proud of how the boys were able to pull together in the second half and keep grinding," said Ryck. "They really competed with excellence tonight."
Watkins Glen outshot Waverly 18-5, and had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore Cameron McIsaac recorded 13 saves in net for the Wolverines, while Bryce Kelly had five for Watkins Glen.
Waverly, now 0-6, hosts O-M Thursday.
