NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: ATHENS' MILLER FOCUSE ON 'FINE-TUNING' AS 2019-20 PRESEASON OPENS (14 PHOTOS) (2019-11-23)

ATHENS "" Athens girls basketball coach Brian Miller, now in his second year, said his program's numbers are solid, and his focus for the preseason is getting his team more familiar with the system he installed in his first season.

"Our numbers are OK. We had a couple girls who didn't come out that we were expecting to," he said. "We have 17 for JV and varsity.

"I like what we have," he noted. "We have a lot of girls who have put a lot of time in all year long.

"Only one girl has never really been part of the program, but we're happy to have her," Miller added.

Miller notes his team is working on the finer points on offense and defense.

"The focus is just fine-tuning stuff," he said. "Last year, we spent a lot of time put everything new in. It was my first year with the girls, and it was a new system for them.

"This year, we're really building on the defensive concepts, and the offensive plays," added Miller. "We're trying to get to that next look that we didn't get to last year because everything was new and different."

Miller is hoping his non-league schedule, which includes games against Windsor, Lansing, and Millville, as well as a home-and-away with Thomas A. Edison, will compliment his NTL schedule.

"It will be competitive for us," he said. "It will be good for us to get outside our league, and play some teams we don't usually see.

"We play Millville right before the Christmas Tournament. They have everybody back, so that will be a good competitive game for us," added Miller. "And, Windsor should be a really tough game as well."
