THE VALLEY — Anytime an athlete is the first to accomplish something, it’s noteworthy.

Senior Sheridan Talada became the first Waverly girl to earn a state medal this year, and beat out a strong field to get the nod as Valley Sports Report’s 2019 Girls “Athlete of the Fall.

Talada, now a two-time VSR Girls Cross Country “Runner of the Year,” finished third at Section IV, Class C State Qualifier, after winning the IAC divisional meet, and finishing second at the IAC Championships. She placed at 18th at the NYS Championships.

During the regular season, she won the Tom Koons Valley meet, and the Baxter-McDaniel Invite (Chenango Valley), finished second at the rugged Marathon Invite, third at the prestigious McQuaid Invitational (Rochester), third at the Bob Greene Invite (Newark Valley), third at Forbes Invitational (Oneonta), and fifth at the Owego Invite.

She also who won all but one of the Lady Wolverines’ dual races.

Talada became the first Wolverine harrier to run in the New York State Federation Cup meet, and finished 54th in a field of 249 runners.

Abby Sindoni, senior, Athens: After missing the majority of her junior season with a knee injury, Sindoni worked her way back, and led the Lady Wildcats to a District 4, Class AAA title repeat. She is the 2019 Valley Sports Report Girls Soccer “Player of the Year.”

Sindoni is a relentless performer, who utilized very good speed, and a pure desire to put the ball in the net. She scored 24 goals and dished out 13 assists in 2019.

Roz Haney, sophomore, Sayre:  Haney utilized her blazing speed and tremendous foot skills to rip the nets for a Valley-high 28 goals this season.

She is the VSR Girls Soccer “Offensive Player of the Year.”

Gabby Picco, junior, Waverly: A tireless performer with great foot skills and a tremendous soccer IQ, Picco helped Waverly to another division title.

She scored 14 goals and doled out a Valley-high 18 assists.

Elizabeth Fritzen, senior, Waverly: Fritzen enjoyed an excellent season with five Top-10 finishes at invitationals during the regular season, and three in the postseason, including one to earn her first trip to States.

During the regular season, Fritzen finished second at Tom Koons Valley meet, fourth at the McDaniel-Baxter Invite, ninth at Bob Greene Invitational, ninth at Forbes Invitational, 10th at Marathon Invite, 13th at Owego Invite, and 15th at the prestigious McQuaid Invitational.

She finished fifth at Section IV, Class C State Qualifier, after finishing third at the IAC divisional meet, and eighth at IAC Championships. She was 56th at States.

Kayla Hughey, senior, Sayre:
Hughey enjoyed a strong dual season, and finished third at the Tom Koons Valley meet, and 24th at the Owego Invite.

Hughey was fifth at NTL Championships, and fifth at District 4, Class A Championships to earn a trip to the PIAA Championships. She finished 88th at States.

Melina Ortiz, senior, Waverly: Possessing great speed, foot skills, and a high soccer IQ, Ortiz was a key cog in Waverly’s division title campaign.

She scored 12 goals and had seven assists on the season.

Ortiz will play at Division I Siena College next fall.
