Valley Sports ReportCANANDAIGUA "" Tioga advanced 11 wrestlers into the quarterfinals, and sits in second place in the team standings after Day 1 of the annual Robert Bradshaw Invitational here at Canandaigua Academy.
Division I Webster-Thomas leads the team standings with 70 points, while Tioga has 68 points, and third-place Clarence has 65 points. Victor is in fourth place with 56.5 points, Horseheads is in fifth at 53 points, Pittsford sits in sixth at 52 points, and Chenango Forks is in seventh at 45.5 points.
"For the first full round, I think we wrestled pretty well," said Tioga coach Kris Harrington. "Pretty much our entire team is in the quarterfinals - there's a lot of wrestling to do tomorrow.
"The guys who are suppose to win, did a lot of winning today," he noted. "But, we better win in the round-of-16."
The quarterfinals were originally slated to be held Friday night, but tournament officials re-scheduled them for Saturday morning.
Advancing to the quarterfinals for the Tigers were seniors Brady Worthing, David MacWhinnie, Dom Wood, and Jared Lamb, as well as juniors Justin Hopkins and Cole Williams, sophomores Emmett Wood and Mason Welch, and freshmen Emily Sindoni, Donovan Smith, and John Woodcock.
"I was glad to see Jared (Lamb) win," said Harrington. "Jared works really hard, so to go out there and beat a seeded kid ... gas him out, turn him, and pin him - that's a nice win for him."
99 pounds: After losing 2-0 in the opening round to Jazz Spaulding of Honeoye Falls-Lima, 8th-grader Levi Bellis bounced back in the consolation bracket with a pin of Dom Attardi of Victor.
Eighth-grader Deakon Bailey was 1-2 on the day. He began his day with a 1-0 win over Zachary Rooks of Pal-Mac in the opening round.
In the round-of-16, Bailey scored an early takedown and led 2-0, but ended up in overtime at 2-2 after six minutes. Honeoye Falls-Lima's Waylan Wiseman scored a fall at 6:41 to advance to the quarterfinals.
In the wrestlebacks, Bailey dropped a 7-0 decision to Pittsford's Jackson Ciocca.
113 pounds: Freshman Emily Sindoni was dominant in a pair of wins to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals.
In the opening round, Sindoni pinned Irondequoit's Joe Fabrizi in 2:26. In the round-of-16, she forged a 14-2 major decision over Geneva's Aiden Cupelli.
Sindoni will face top-seed Tommy Dale of Horseheads in the quarterfinals.
120 pounds: Sophomore Mason Welch and freshman Donovan Smith both registered pins in the round-of-16 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Welch decked Williamson-Marion-Sodus' Ryan Labarr in 2:57, while Smith flattened Pittsford's Jack Crowley in 2:33.
Welch will face South Seneca's Trent Stagg in the quarterfinals, while Smith will square off with Webster-Thomas' Bryan McLean. The winners will square off in the semifinals.
126 pounds: Senior David MacWhinnie and freshman John Woodcock both advanced to the quarterfinals in the 126-pound bracket.
MacWhinnie recorded a pair of falls to advance. He decked Irondequoit's Nate Peters in 31 seconds in the opening round, then finished off Dakota Davis of Canandaigua in 5:46 in the round-of-16.
Woodcock, who received a bye in the opening round, forged an 11-3 major decision over Irondequoit's Hunter Kamas in the round-of-16.
MacWhinnie, the top seed, will square off with Pal-Mac's Aiden Gales in the quarterfinals, while Woodcock will face Webster-Thomas's Jackson Allen.
At 132 pounds, junior Justin Hopkins, after receiving a bye in the opening round, registered a first-period fall (59 seconds) of Marcus Whitman-Penn Yan's Zach Durgan to advance to the quarterfinals.
He will face Dillon English of Webster-Thomas.
At 138 pounds, senior Brady Worthing scored a pair of first-period falls to advance to the quarterfinals.
Worthing flattened Dundee's Jacob Shimer in 27 seconds in the opening round, then pinned Union Springs-Port Byron's Gabe Newton in 1:17 in the round-of-16.
Worthing will face Marcus Whitman-Penn Yan's Damien Snyder in the quarterfinals.
At 152 pounds, sophomore Emmett Wood recorded a pair of quick falls to advance to the quarterfinals in the 152-pound bracket.
In the opening round, Wood flattened Pal-Mac's German Villatoro-Nunez in 46 seconds. He followed that up in the round-of-16 with a pin of Clarence's Jimmy Dicostanzo in 58 seconds.
Wood will square off with Hilton's Nate Kasper in the quarterfinals.
At 160 pounds, junior Ethan Agan, in just his second varsity match, was pinned by Hilton's Ruvim Poplavskiy in 2:28.
At 170 pounds, senior Mason Booser, in his first varsity match, was pinned by Pal-Mac's Jake Pate in 1:44.
Sophomore Josh Snell was pinned by O-M/Watkins Glen's Braiden Ventra in 1:02.
At 182 pounds, senior Ryleigh Shedden was pinned by Webster-Thomas' Chris Pannell in 1:17.
At 195 pounds, freshman Bradley Guiles was pinned by Marcus Whitman-Penn Yan's Colton Yerkes in 1:37.
At 220 pounds, seniors Dom Wood and Jared Lamb both registered falls to advance to the quarterfinals.
Wood decked Pal-Mac's Gabe Perry in 30 seconds, while Lamb pinned Dundee's Tate Hoyt in 2:58.
Wood will face Canandaigua's Kaleb Sparks in the quarterfinals, while Lamb will square off with Rodney Jones III of Williamson-Marion-Sodus. The winners will meet in the semifinals.
At 285 pounds, junior Cole Williams received a bye into the quarterfinals in the 11-man, 285-pound bracket.
Wrestling resumes Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m.
