IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: BIG SECOND HALF CARRIES TIOGA TO 58-52 WIN OVER S-VE (2020-02-10)

TIOGA CENTER "" Tioga took control of the game in the third quarter, then held on for a 58-52 win over S-VE here Monday night in IAC South Small School Division girls basketball action.

Ava Bruehwiler scored five points in the first quarter for the Lady Panthers to help them to a 10-6 lead after the first eight minutes. They maintained their advantage in the second quarter, taking an 18-14 lead into the halftime locker room.

The Lady Tigers found their offensive groove in the third quarter, with junior Eve Wood scoring seven points, and junior Olivia Ayres knocking down a pair of 3-pointers in a 24-8 blitz that gave them a 36-26 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

After scoring 26 points through three quarter, S-VE matched that output in the fourth quarter. Sophia Dutra scored seven points in the final stanza, while Madelynn Pasto canned a pair of 3-pointers, Hannah Martinez hit a 3-pointer and scored five points, and Sam Deppe and Bruehwiler added four points apiece.

However, Tioga made 16 of 26 free throws to preserve the win. Wood made 9 of 18, while Ayres was 4-for-4, and senior Chloe Bellis was 2-for-2.

Wood led Tioga with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Ayres had 19 points, including four 3-pointers on six shots from behind the arc, two assists, and one blocked shot, Chloe Bellis added 10 points, 11 rebounds, five steals, and two assists, and senior Giovanna Rossi chipped in with seven points, 16 rebounds, and three steals.

Bruehwiler led S-VE with 11 points, while Dutra added 10, and Martinez chipped in with nine.

The Lady Tigers, now 7-11, host Marathon Tuesday, and Towanda Wednesday. They need one win to qualify for the upcoming Section IV playoffs.
