COLLEGE WRESTLING: ATHENS GRAD COURTNEY WINS WEIGHT CLASS AT APPALACHIAN STATE INDIVIDUAL QUAD (2021-01-09)

Valley Sports Report
BOONE, N.C. - Athens grad Brian Courtney, a redshirt junior on the University or Virginia wrestling team, finished first in the 141-pound weight class with a perfect 3-0 mark at the Appalachian State Individual Quad.

Courtney opened the day with a 17-0 technical fall win over Dawson Bates of Appalachian State.

Courtney scored a takedown midway through the first period, and added two sets of four near-fall points to take a 10-0 lead after the opening three minutes.

He recorded an escape 43 seconds into the second period, and a takedown moments later to extend the lead to 13-0. Courtney locked Bates into another pinning combination moments later, but Bates broke free with three seconds left in the period to bring an end the bout at 4:57.

Courtney won his second match of the day by fall in 2:04 against Appalachian State's Heath Gonyer.

He scored a takedown 77 seconds into the bout, and finished off Gonyer 47 seconds later.

Courtney completed his perfect day with a pin of Appalachian State's Anthony Brito in 1:31.

Courtney took Brito down and straight to his back 89 seconds into their bout, and flattened his shoulders to the mat just two seconds later.

Virginia will host Gardner-Webb Saturday in its first dual of the season.
