WAVERLY "" Waverly raced out to a 13-point halftime lead, and cruised to a 56-42 win over Newark Valley here Wednesday night in IAC junior varsity boys basketball action.
Isaiah Bretz and Jay Pipher led the way for the junior Wolverines, combining for 37 points.
Pipher scored eight points in the first quarter, and Nehemiah Anthony added an old-fashioned three-point play to help Waverly to an 18-10 lead after the first eight minutes.
Bretz drained a trio of 3-pointers in the second quarter, while Pipher added four points and Jacob Benjamin canned a 3-pointer to fuel a 16-10 spurt that pushed the junior Wolverines' lead to 34-21 at the half.
Daniel Pirger and Daniel Truesdail combined for 17 second-half points for Newark Valley, but Bretz and Nate DeLill combined for 15 points for Waverly to preserve the win.
Bretz scored 20 points, including three 3-pointers, and Pipher had 17 points and seven steals to lead Waverly, while DeLill added six points and three rebounds, and Benjamin chipped in with five points and three rebounds.
Truesdail led Newark Valley with 21 points, while Pirger added nine points, and Landon Spoonhower chipped in with eight points.
Newark Valley hosts Waverly tonight.
