WAVERLY — Newark Valley scored about 16 minutes into the game, then made it stand up for a 1-0 win, handing Waverly its first loss of the season here on a rainy Wednesday evening in IAC girls soccer action at Memorial Stadium.
“Newark Valley came off ready to play today,” said Waverly coach Tara Hogan. “They beat us to every ball. We just never found a rhythm today.
“The things we worked on, and improved upon when we played O-M, just seemed to go out the window today,” noted Hogan. “i can't necessarily blame it on the crummy weather, either.
“We just didn't show up today,” added Hogan.
Newark Valley’s Emma Miller scored the game’s lone goal with 23:48 remaining in the first half.
Waverly had a 6-5 edge in shots-on-goal, while Newark Valley had four corner kicks to Waverly three.
Kaitlyn Clark recorded four saves in net for Waverly, while Newark Valley’s Kathryn Simmons had five saves.
Hogan said her team’s defense made up for some poor decisions on offense.
“We made slow and poor decisions by constantly passing back into pressure instead of finding our other options.
“We relied very heavily on our center-defender —most of the time it was Kennedy Westbrook but Gabby (Picco) was moved back there at some points, too — to rush and cover a poor pass / decision,” said Hogan.
“Paige Robinson and Bella Romano both held the sides strong,” added Hogan. “They are so reliable,”
Hogan is hoping the Lady Wolverines, now 3-1, can get healthy by Monday when they travel to face Notre Dame.
“We are battling going into every game with one healthy sub — and 2 injured ones,” she said. “I’m hoping we can refocus before our next game.”
