SAYRE — Canton scored three runs in the top of the first inning, and never trailed in a 14-2 six-inning win over Sayre here Monday afternoon in NTL Small School Division softball action at Riverfront Park.

Lady Warrior lead-off hitter Emmi Ward paced Canton in the win. She was 4-for-4, scored five runs, and hit a solo home run in her final at-bat.

Emmi Ward reached base on an error to lead off the game. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Sara Saar, and scored on an RBI single by Keri Wesneski. Molly Ward followed with a single, Kate Shay doubled, and Jill Shay capped the rally with a single.

The Lady Redskins answered with two runs in the home half of the inning. Madison Smith was hit by a pitch, Alyssa Murrelle, and Hailey McCaig each worked walks. and Makenna Garrison stroked a run-scoring single in the rally.

Canton extended its lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, then scored four more runs in the fourth inning in a rally that featured doubles by Saar, Wesneski, and Kate Shay.

The Lady Warriors added two runs in the fifth to make it 11-2, and scored three more runs in the sixth a rally that included a pinch-hit RBI triple by Rachel Martin, and Emmi Ward’s solo home run.

Jillian Shay retired Sayre in order in the home half of the sixth to invoke the 10-run “mercy” rule.

Shay, who retired the final eight batters she faced, allowed two runs on two hits, while striking out four, walking three, and hitting two batters.

McCaig doubled and Garrison singled to account for Sayre’s two hits.

Saar and Wesneski were 2-for-2 at the plate for Canton, while Jill Shay was 2-for-3, and Molly Ward and Kate Shay were 2-for-4.

Sayre, now 0-2, is slated to host Wyalusing Friday.
