OWEGO "" Sayre's comeback efforts were thwarted on a double play to end the game - a 3-2 loss to Vestal here Friday evening at the Owego Little League 12U Tournament.
Sayre took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-out RBI single by Brady Flynn.
Vestal scored all three of its runs in the home half of the third inning to tale a 3-1 lead.
Sayre got back-to-back two-out singles from Jordan Brown and Chase Wheeler, but Brown was cut down at the plate on Wheeler's single to end the inning.
Sayre also put two runners on base in the fifth inning on a one-out single by Nolan Raupers, and Blake Zingeser getting hit by a pitch, but couldn't push a run across.
In the top of the sixth inning, Justin Koenig rapped a one-out double, and Shaine Strickland followed with a single.
After Strickland stole second, Flynn lifted a fly ball to right field to score Koenig. The throw from the outfield was a bit off-the-mark, and Strickland attempted to score, but was tagged out at the plate to end the game.
Flynn singled and drove in two runs, and Koenig doubled and scored two runs to pace Sayre's eight-hit attack, while Brendan Cook, Strickland, Brown, Wheeler, Nolan Raupers, and Zingeser each contributed a single.
Sayre will return to action Saturday afternoon against Nichols-Tioga.
