SECTION IV JV FOOTBALL: WAVERLY BLANKS TIOGA, 14-0 (2021-10-11)

WAVERLY - Waverly scored TDs on its first possession of the game, and its first possession of the second half on its way to a 14-0 win over Tioga here Monday night in junior varsity football action at Memorial Stadium.

The junior Wolverines opened the game at midfield, and on three carries by Braedon Hills moved the ball 15 yards to the Tioga 35. Micah Chandler finished off the drive with a 35-yard TD run with 10:14 remaining in the first quarter to give Waverly a 6-0 lead.

After a series of punts, Tioga muffed a punt and Waverly's Roger Webster pounced on the loose at the Tioga 44.

Waverly picked up one first down, but turned the ball over on downs at the Tioga 26. with 3:44 remaining in the first half.

The Wolverine defense forced Tioga, which had just two first downs in the first half, into a three-and-out, but time ran out quickly, and Waverly took a 6-0 lead into the halftime locker room.

The junior Tigers picked up a pair of first downs in its first possession of the second half. Levi Bellis' four-yard run on fourth-and-2, and Gianni Silvestri followed with an 11-yard run that moved the ball to the Tioga 49.

However, two plays later, Tioga put the ball on the ground and Waverly's Dylan Baggerly recovered it at midfield.

Waverly didn't take much time to get the ball into the end zone. On third-and-5, Connor Stotler scored on a QB keeper from 45 yards out to make it 12-0 with 7:02 remaining in the third quarter. Hills tacked on the 2-point conversion to make it 14-0.

Brendan Sindoni returned the ensuing kickoff 18 yards to the Tioga 43. Tioga picked up a first down on a 13-yard run by Silvestri to the Waverly 37, but turned the ball over on downs four plays later at the 29.

Two plays later, Stotler ripped off a 30-yard run, but Waverly's possession stalled out on downs at the Tioga 26 with 10:46 remaining in the game.

The Tigers next possession ended with Waverly's Jason Marrone intercepting a Tioga pass.

After stopping Waverly on downs at the Tioga 24, Silvestri connected with Jake Brown on a 26-yard pass to midfield, but the drive stalled on downs at the Waverly 41 when Stotler made a nice open-field stop of Silvestri a yard short of the first down.

Waverly ran the clock out to preserve the win.

Stotler led the Waverly ground game with 86 yards and one TD on nine carries, while Chandler had 78 yards and one TD on 12 carries, Hills added 49 yards on nine carries, and Wayne Allen chipped in with 24 yards on five carries.

Silvestri led Tioga with 39 yards on 10 carries, and completed one pass for 26 yards, while Bellis added 29 yards on nine carries.
