ELMIRA HEIGHTS — After a slow start, Waverly won the third set, but Edison prevailed in a 3-1 decision here Tuesday night in IAC South Large School Division volleyball action.
The Lady Spartans won the first two sets convincingly by scores of 25-14 and 25-12, but the Lady Wolverines bounced back with a 25-21 win in the third set. Edison closed out the match with a 25-22 win in the fourth set.
“The team did a great job serving,” said Waverly coach Charity Meyers. “By the third and fourth set, we were starting to click.
“We definitely improved throughout the night,” added Meyers.
Freshman Lillie Kirk led Waverly with 13 service points, including five aces, 15 digs, and two kills, while sophomore Peighton Streeter had eight points, seven kills, and 16 digs, and sophomore Peyton Shaw has nine points, four kills, and three assists.
Junior Michaela Lauper had five points, five kills, 13 assists, and nine digs for the Lady Wolverines, while 8th-grader Brilynn Belles had four points (two aces) and 17 digs, and senior Sydney Nierstedt had two points, two kills, and two digs.
Emma Maggs led Edison with 14 points, including nine aces, while Ashlyn Maggs had 11 points, including nine aces, and eight kills, and Hayleigh Vanderhoof had five points (two aces), nine kills, and eight assists.
Waverly, now 4-4, plays its third road match in as many nights Wednesday at Newark Valley.
JV: Edison won the JV match by scores of 25-14 and 25-12. Waverly won the bonus third set, 25-21.
Maddy Olmsted led Waverly with eight points, eight assists, seven digs, and two kills, while Lainey Teeter lad eight points (four aces), nine digs, and three kills, Maddie Farnham and Makena Pike each had three points (two aces), Ashlen Croft added two points, and Meghan Apgar and Natalie Lauper each chipped in with three digs.
