NEWARK VALLEY "" In its third match in as many nights, Waverly dropped a tightly-contested 3-1 decision to Newark Valley here Wednesday night in IAC volleyball action.

"We might have lost tonight, but it was a win with how the team came together and played a great match tonight," said Waverly coach Charity Meyers. "It was so exciting to watch.

"They did an amazing job serving and receiving," she added. "All around, we showed a big improvement on the court."

The Lady Cardinals won the first set 25-20, but the Lady Wolverines bounced back for a 25-23 win the the second set. Newark Valley closed out the match with wins of 25-19 and 25-22.

Junior Michaela Lauper led Waverly with 11 service points, including five aces, nine setter assists, and six digs, while 8th-grader Brilynn Belles had 11 points (three aces) and nine digs, and freshman Lillie Kirk had seven points (two aces), nine kills, and 16 digs.

Sophomore Peyton Shaw had six points, seven kills, and five blocks for the Lady Wolverines, while sophomore Paighten Streeter had three points and 10 digs, senior Sydney Nierstedt had two points, two kills, two blocks, and two digs, sophomore Erica Ryck added four assists, and senior Derek Bartlett chipped in with two digs.

Jasmine Graham led Newark Valley with five service aces, eight kills, one block, and 13 digs, while Jenna Hanson had two aces, three kills, 19 setter assists, and two digs, Mahana Gardner had four aces, six kills, two blocks, and five digs, and Gracie Gardner registered seven kills, one block, and four digs.

Waverly, now 4-5, hosts Newfield Friday night.

JV: Newark Valley swept the junior varsity match by scores of 25-8, 25-18, and 25-11.

Meghan Apgar led Waverly with five points (three aces), while Maddy Olmsted had three points (three aces), two kills, two digs, and four assists, Ashlen Croft had four points (two aces), Maddie Farnham had three points, Natalie Lauper recorded seven digs, Laney Teeter added three digs, and Alayna Miller chipped in with two kills.
