IAC SOFTBALL: UNION SPRINGS BLANKS TIOGA, 6-0, IN SMALL SCHOOL TITLE GAME (2022-05-12)

AURORA, N.Y. — Union Springs’ Hailee Smith shut down Tioga’s potent offense in a 6-0 win here Thursday afternoon in the overall IAC Small School softball championship game at Wells College.

Smith struck out three and walked none, while limiting the Lady Tigers to five singles in a seven-inning, complete-game performance.

The Lady Wolves scored one run in the first inning, and two more in the second to take an early 3-0 lead.

Union Springs tacked on three insurance runs in the fifth inning on a three-run home run by Smith.

Tioga had a runner thrown out at the plate in the second inning, and another runner thrown out at the plate in the sixth. They were the only two runners to advance past second base the entire game.

Freshman McKenzie Williams was 3-for-3, while senior Austyn Vance, and junior M.J. Thetga added singles to account for Tioga’s five hits.

Senior Alissa Hine was tagged with the loss, allowing six runs — five earned — on 10 hits. She struck out two and walked none.

Tioga plays at Athens and Sayre Saturday in the "Battle at the Border."
