WYALUSING — In what could be a preview of the District 4, Class AA championship game, Blake Morningstar threw 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball to lead Wyalusing to a 2-0 win over Sayre here Friday afternoon in a battle of NTL divisional baseball champs.

The two teams entered the contest ranked 1 and 2 in the Class AA power points, and are likely to be the top two seeds in the upcoming playoffs.

The loss snaps Sayre’s 16-game win streak.

Morningstar allowed three hits, while striking out 11 and walking five to earn the win, while Hunter House fanned two and walked one in 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief to record the save.

Senior Kannon VanDuzer was the tough-luck loser, allowing two runs — one earned — on six hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked three. Senior David Northrup retired the only two batters he faced, with one strikeout.

The Rams took advantage of an error, and scored on a wild pitch in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead, and tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth.

The Redskins left nine runners on base, including six in scoring position, and left the bases loaded in the fifth inning, with Morningstar getting back-to-back strikeouts to escape the jam.

Junior Zach Garrity and señor Dom Fabbri both doubled, and senior Brayden Horton added a single to account for Sayre’s three hits.

Sayre, now 16-2, squares off with Athens Sunday at PNC Field in Scranton.
