VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: WAVERLY'S BECHY HEADLINES TIOGA-LADEN SUPER 7 AS BOYS 'NEWCOMER OF SPRING' (2022-06-16)

THE VALLEY — Junior Kayleb Bechy gave track & field a try this spring for the first time, and by the end of the season found himself at the New York State Championships in two events. He is the 2022 Valley Sports Report Boys “Newcomer of the Spring.”

Bechy finished second in the 100-meter dash at the Section IV State Qualifier to earn a trip to States, where he finished 20th in a personal-best time of 11.15 seconds.

Bechy won the 100-meter dash title at the Class C Championships, and was second in the 200-meter dash at the IAC Championships. He won the 100- and 200-meter sprints at the IAC South Large School Divisional meet

Bechy ran the opening leg on Waverly’s 400-meter relay team that won the IAC title, the Class C title, and won the gold at the Section IV State Qualifier. The relay finished 10th at States.

Jerrell Sackett, junior, Waverly:
Sackett ran the second leg on Waverly’s 400-meter relay team that won the IAC title, the Class C title, and won the gold at the Section IV State Qualifier. The relay finished 10th at States.

At the Section IV State Qualifier, Sackett stepped in at the last minute and ran the anchor leg to help the Wolverine 1,600-meter relay to a first-place finish and a trip to States. He also ran on the relay at the State meet, where it finished 11th.

Individually, Sackett finished fourth in the 100-meter dash, and fifth in the high jump at the IAC Championships. At the Large School Divisional meet, he was second in the 100, and third in the high jump.

Gavin Albrecht, 8th-grader — track & field, Tioga: Albrecht placed in the pole vault in every Tioga meet this season, including a season-best 12-feet to win the South Seneca Invite.

He finished his season with a sixth-place finish at the Section IV State Qualifier. On his way there, Albrecht placed first at the IAC Small School divisional meet, and the IAC Championships, and placed second at the Class D Championships.

Drew Macumber, sophomore — baseball, Tioga: Macumber hit .345 (19 hits in 55 ABs) with 17 runs scored, six doubles, 13 RBI, and 15 stolen bases.

On the mound, he was 2-1 with a 2.18 ERA, and  21 strikeouts in 16 innings pitched.

Shea Bailey, 8th-grader — baseball, Tioga: Bailey hit .339 (21 hits in 62 ABs) with 23 runs scored, four doubles, 14 RBI, and 25 stolen bases. He also walked 11 times for a .461 on-base percentage.

On the mound, Bailey was 1-2 with a 5.86 ERA, and 21 strikeouts in 14 1/3 innings.

Andrew Earley, freshman — track & field: Earley was a consistent point-winner for the Tigers in both hurdling events.

Earley won the 110-meter hurdles and was second in the 400-meter hurdles at the IAC Small School Divisional meet, and was second in 110 hurdles, and third in the 400 hurdles at the IAC Championships.

Earley placed fourth in the 110 and 400 hurdles at the Class D Championships. He was 12th in the 100 hurdles at the State Qualifier.

Karson Sindoni, sophomore — baseball, Tioga: Sindoni hit .291 (16 hits in 55 ABs) with 16 runs scored, six doubles, one triple, 10 RBI, and nine stolen bases. He also walked nine times for a .400 on-base percentage.
