VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: TIOGA'S BAILEY, WAVERLY'S BEEMAN NAMED GRUMPY GRIZZLY "ATHLETES OF THE WEEK" (2023-01-22)

THE VALLEY — Tioga sophomore Kail Bailey went 3-0 to win her weight class at the first-ever IAC girls wrestling championships, and Waverly senior Ty Beeman beat a previously-unbeaten grappler to win IAC wrestling gold. They are the Valley Sports Report / Grumpy Grizzly “Athletes of the Week,” for the week ending Jan. 21.

TIOGA’S BAILEY NAMED VSR GIRLS “ATHLETE OF THE WEEK”

Bailey posted a 3-0 record — all by fall — to win the 132-pound title at the first-ever IAC girls wrestling championships.

Bailey scored a pin of Waverly’s Lily Sickler in 2:10, and Waverly’s Tayanna Andrews in 46 seconds.

She finished off her perfect day with a pin of Whitney Point’s Isabelle Keihle in 59 seconds.

WAVERLY’S BEEMAN NAMED VSR BOYS “ATHLETE OF THE WEEK”

Beeman went 4-0 to win the 215-pound title at the IAC wrestling championships Saturday, and was 7-0 on the week.

Beeman opened with a pin of Tioga’s Austin Babcock in 2:53, then beat Newark Valley’s Seth Northrup, 9-3, in the quarterfinals.

After pinning Tioga’s Tate Macauley in 3:19 in the semifinals, Beeman won a wild, 10-9, decision over Groton’s previously-unbeaten Donovan Mitchell, who was 18-0 entering the bout.

Beeman was also 3-0 — all via falls — Wednesday at the Section IV Duals, helping Waverly advance to the finals.
