MYRTLE BEACH - Athens grad Caydence Macik, a freshman on the Division II Mansfield University softball team, is off to a fast start at the plate, hitting safely in all five games she has started in this season, including a game-winning home run Friday.
Macik had her first collegiate hit — a two-RBI single — on March 5 in an 11-2 loss to Bowie State.
In her next three starts, Macik had four hits in 10 at-bats, including her first multi-hit game on Tuesday in a 5-2 loss to Rio Grande.
On Friday, Macik launched a go-ahead three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to put Mansfield up 10-8 on its way to an 11-8 win over Maine Presque Isle. For the game, Macik was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and three RBI.
On the season, Macik is hitting .412 (7 hits in 17 ABs) with one home run, five RBI, two runs scored, and one stolen base.
Defensively at shortstop, Macik has handled 24 defensive chances flawlessly, including a pair of double plays.
Mansfield, now 9-3, returns to action Tuesday in a doubleheader at Bloomsburg.
