
THE VALLEY — Sayre freshman Kaitlyn Sutton made an immediate impact, and was a key contributor in the Lady Redskins’ improvement this season. She is the 2022-23 Girls "Newcomer of the Winter."
A good ball-handler, Sutton showed a knack for scoring in all facets of the game, and was a sneaky good rebounder.
She averaged 7.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 2.4 steals per game. She also knocked down 19 3-pointers.
The Lady entered the season on a 19-game losing streak, and that skein extended to 29 games before they broke through and won four of six games on their way to a 4-18 season.

Olivia Cheresnowsky, freshman, girls swimming, Athens: A consistent points-winner all season, Cheresnowsky won three medals at the District 4 Championships, including a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke. She finished sixth in the 100-yard freestyle.
Cheresnowsky swam on the Athens 400-yard freestyle relay that finished second at the District 4 Championships, setting a new school record in its final swim. She also swam on the 200-yard freestyle relay that placed third at the D4 meet in a school-record time.
Elizabeth Denlinger, freshman, swimming, Athens: Denlinger placed fifth in the 100-yard freestyle, and ninth in 100-yard breaststroke at the District 4 Championships.
Denlinger swam on the Athens 400-yard freestyle relay that finished second at the District 4 Championships, setting a new school record in its final swim. She also swam on the 200-yard freestyle relay that placed third at the D4 meet in a school-record time.
Elona Holmes, freshman, wrestling, Waverly: Holmes battled some injuries this season, but finished third at the Southern Tier Memorial, and placed sixth at the New York State Championships.
Kyah Nelson, 7th-grader, wrestling, Tioga: Nelson was dominant during the regular season, winning titles at the Southern Tier Memorial, the Oneonta Tournament, and the Jarvis Tournament. She also won a Section IV title, but went 1-2 at States.
Evelyn Panek, freshman, swimming, Athens: Panek placed sixth in the 50-yard freestyle and 11th in 100-yard butterfly at the District 4 Championships. She also swam on the 200-yard medley relay that placed sixth.
Leah Nason, freshman, Athens: Nason played basketball this season, and was a late addition to the wrestling team. She placed second at then Northeast Regionals, and was one win short of reaching the podium at States, where she went 1-2.
