Valley Sports ReportATHENS - Athens poured seven runs across the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning to blow open a close game on its way to a 9-1 win over RTL here Thursday night in its final game of pool play in the District 15 Little League Majors Division baseball playoffs.
With the win, Athens finishes pool play at 2-0 to earn a top seed in upcoming bracket play. Athens will host the third-place finisher from the "East" pool Monday at 6 p.m.
Shea Davidson allowed one run on three hits, while striking out four and walking two in five innings to earn the win. Jacob Saxon struck out the side in order in one inning of relief.
RTL took the lead early with a run in the top of the first, but Athens answered with a run in the second, and another run in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Davidson singled and scored two runs, and Griffin Smith singled, scored one run, and drove in one run to pace Athens at the plate, while Jacob Saxon singled and scored one run. Caleb Gorsline tripled and one RBI, and Ryan Hicks, Evan Westerfield, Tyler Pelchy, Aiden Briggs, and E.J. Glielmi each scored one run.
