ATHENS - Athens junior Ella Coyle was named a first-team NTL Large School volleyball all-star, while her teammate, junior Kassie Babcock, was a second-team selection in recent voting by the league’s coaches.
"I’m so proud of these two Wildcats for their leadership and work ethic. I’m so glad they could be
recognized," said Athens coach Heather Hanson.
FIRST TEAM
Ella Coyle, junior Athens: A three-year starter, Coyle led the Wildcats with 281 serve-receptions (just 45 errors) and 181 digs, while also recording 28 service points, including 12 saves, and seven kills.
"Ella has definitely stepped into her role as a leader on the team," said Hanson. "You could see how the team relied on Ella’s ball control throughout the season.
"I am so proud of Ella and her hard work and with each season her strength, confidence and ball control gets better and better," added Hanson. "I know she will put the work in in the offseason … I can’t wait to see what happens for her next."
SECOND TEAM
Kassie Babcock, junior, Athens: A three-year varsity player, Babcock registered 93 kills, 60 points, including 17 aces, and 32 digs. She also had 47 serve-receptions, and just 11 errors.
"Going from outside to middle hitter this year, and not getting the back row play she’s used to, Kassie stepped up for us in the middle … averaging 2 kills per set and a team-high hitting percentage of .119," said Hanson. Kassie’s versatility in her hitting placement improved tremendously this season. Placement hitting is no easy feat, and she is making it look simple.
"She fine-tunes her craft in the offseason," added Hanson. "Kassie is the hype girl and gets the team psyched up as well as her coach.
