VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: TIOGA'S ROE NAMED BOYS SOCCER 'PLAYER OF THE YEAR;' TIOGA'S BROWNE, LAYMAN, AND ATHENS' CAMPBELL, GRAZUL ALSO EARN TOP HONORS (2023-11-30)

THE VALLEY — Senior Tyler Roe smashed school scoring records, and led Tioga to is first division title since 2015. He is the 2023 Valley Sports Report Boys Soccer "Player of the Year."

Athens senior Alex Campbell is the "Defensive Player of the Year," and Athens sophomore Nick Grazul is the "Newcomer of the Year" for the All-Valley team, while Tioga junior Jake Browne is the "Keeper of the Year," and Tioga’s Adam Layman is the "Coach of the Year."

Roe finished the season with 30 goals, which gave him 65 for his career — both school records. He also had three assists this season, and had multiple games with four and five goals.

Roe, who is extremely quick with the ball at his feet, is a whirling dervish of offensive energy. He possesses a high soccer IQ, a strong leg, and a limitless motor.

Strictly a defender until this year, Campbell showed his versatility for the Wildcats in 2023. A lockdown defender, with a tremendous soccer IQ, he scored five goals and had one assist.

A smart and ultra-athletic player, Grazul was the top newcomer in the Valley despite being away from the sport for several years. He had three goals, and two assists.

An athletic and intuitive keeper, Browne was also a vocal leader on the defensive end of the field.

He posted three shutouts, and two one-goal games in help Tioga to a 7-7-2 record and a division title.

After four years without a program, Adam Layman took the coaching job at Tioga in 2021, and in his third season guided the Tigers to its first IAC South Small School Division title since 2015.

Tioga posted a 7-5-2 record in the regular season, including a 6-1-1 record in its division, before losing to state-ranked Southern Cayuga in the overall IAC Small School championship game, and to Walton-Downsville in the Section IV playoffs.

Korey Miller, senior, Athens: A heady and versatile player, Miller led Athens with eight goals and nine assists.

Sam Knight, senior, Waverly: A lockdown defender, Knight was nearly unbeatable in 1-v-1 situations. He was a steadying influence on his teammates, and had a strong leg.

Charlie Larrabee, senior, Waverly: Possessing sprinter’s speed, Larrabee has a high soccer IQ and was on his way to a big season, with five goals in five games, before suffering a season-ending injury.

Ethan Landmesser, senior, Tioga: A heady and physical defender, Landmesser also made his presence felt on the offensive end, where he scored two goals and dished out two assists.

James Miller, sophomore, Tioga: Quick, physical, and versatile, Miller scored six goals, and dished out three assists on the season.
