IAC BOYS & GIRLS WRESTLING: TIOGA'S NELSON WINS TITLE AT U-E TRADESMAN TOURNEY, THREE TIGERS WIN WEIGHT CLASSES IN JV BOYS TOURNEY (24 PHOTOS) (2023-12-17)

ENDICOTT - Eighth-grader Kyah Nelson won the 165-pound title at the U-E Tradesman Girls Tournament, while a trio of Tioga wrestlers — sophomore Connor Streeter, 8th-grader Mark McCane, and junior Garrett Godfrey — won title in the JV Boys Tournament.
Freshman Amelia Toomey placed second in the 132-pound bracket for Tioga.
The Lady Tigers, with just three girls in action, placed seventh in the team standings with 60 points. Minisink Valley, with a full compliment of 21 wrestlers, placed first with 268 points, while Windsor (13) was second with 137.5 points, U-E (5) was third with 109, Corning (6) was fourth with 88, SVEC (4) was fifth with 75 points, and Chenango Forks (7) was sixth with 72 points.
Nelson pinned her way to the title, with three of her four falls coming in the first period.
Nelson opened her day with a pin of U-E’s Teagan McGuinness in 2:45, then decked Windsor’s Annabella Thompson in 1:12. She finished pool action at 3-0 after receiving a forfeit from Minisink Valley’s Leah Lofstedt.
In the semifinals of the championship bracket, Nelson pinned Windsor’s Emily Williams in 1:49. In the championship match, Nelson again got the better of McGuinness, pinning the U-E ace in 1:23.
Freshman Amelia Toomey placed second in the 132-pound bracket with a 3-2 record. All three of her wins came via falls, and both of her losses came to nationally-ranked Jaida Macaluso of Minisink Valley.
Toomey started her day with a 36-second pin of Oxford-Greene’s Brooke Williams, then scored a fall in 4:29 against Chenango Forks’ Emily Phelps.
In her final match in pool action, Toomey was pinned in 43 seconds by Malacuso.
In the semifinals of the championship bracket, Toomey pinned Minisink Valley’s Anastasia Albornoz in 2:42 to set up a rematch with Malacuso, who again scored a fall, but this time needed 5:22 to lock down the 132-pound title.
Freshman Marcy Moniz placed seventh in the 132-pound weight class for the Tigers. She was 1-4 on the day, with her only win a 63-second fall over Windsor’s Jayce Barton in the seventh-place match.
JV BOYS
Joining Streeter, McCane, and Godfrey on the podium for the Tigers were freshman Max Stauder, who placed second at 170 pounds, junior Jonah Lamb, who was third at 190 pounds, and freshman James Howey, who was fifth at 170 pounds.
Streeter won the 116-pound bracket with a 5-0 record, winning all five via fall, including three in the first period.
McCane won the 285-pound bracket with a 5-0 mark. He won his first three matches via first-period fall, and finished pool action at 4-0 after winning by injury default.
In the finals, McCane topped M-E’s Landon Armstrong, 5-1, to cap a perfect day.
Godfrey won the 285-pound B bracket with a 5-0 record. Godfrey also won three of his four pool play matches via fall, with two coming in the first period. His fourth match was won due to an injury default.
In the finals, Godfrey edges Johnson CIty’s Sam Ross, 3-2.
Stauder was 4-1 on the day. He won two of his matches in the pool action via fall, and also earned a 13-3 major decision over U-E’s Boston Alari, and a 3-1 win over Corning’s Patrick Akerelrea.
In the finals, Stauder dropped a 3-2 decision to Horseheads’ Elijah Friend.
Lamb was also 4-1 on the day. Lamb won both of his pool match via first-period fall, then pinned Owego’s Samuel Nowetner in 2:52 in the quarterfinals.
Lamb lost via fall to SVEC’s Jack Smith in the semifinals, but bounced back to deck Schuyler’s Dana Spaccio in 22 seconds in the third-place match.
Howey was also 4-1 on the day. Howey went 2-1 in pool action with a pair of first-period falls, but ended up in the consolation bracket.
In the semifinals, he pinned Edison’s Landon Baldwin in 6:34, then pinned Chenango Forks’ Evan Truesdale while he was leading 11-10 decision in the fifth-place match.
