Valley Sports ReportTHE VALLEY — It’s an extremely busy week, with the start of the 2024 fall sports season in New York on Tuesday.
There are a whopping 32 events in the first full week of action, including 10 on Saturday, eight on Thursday, and six on Tuesday.
The following are all of the home varsity events this week, and a few of the notable road events:
MONDAY (0)
Labor Day.
TUESDAY (6)
• Athens hosts Wellsboro in a key early-season NTL boys soccer match-up.
• The Athens cross country teams open the season at Round Top against NEB and Towanda.
• The Tioga boys open their soccer season at Marathon in the first of three games in four days.
• The Sayre and Athens golfers will be in action at the NTL’s fourth golf match of the season, this week at Corey Creek in Mansfield.
• The Waverly boys open their 2024 soccer season at Elmira.
• Waverly boys golf plays it first-ever match in the STAC at Susquehanna Valley.
WEDNESDAY (4)
• The Athens girls host Williamson on the pitch at Alumni Stadium.
• The Tioga girls open the 2024 soccer campaign at home against Marathon.
• Tioga field hockey opens its season Wednesday at Owego.
• The Waverly girls open their 2024 campaign at Norwich.
THURSDAY (8)
• The Waverly girls swim team opens its season at home against Chenango Forks.
• The Tioga boys will host Southern Cayuga on the pitch at Haggerty Field.
• Waverly opens its 2024 volleyball season at "home" against Oneonta at Sayre High School.
• The Waverly boys host Windsor on the links at Shepard Hills.
• The Waverly boys open the home portion of their soccer schedule under the lights against Norwich.
FRIDAY (4)
• Sayre hosts Montgomery in its home opener on the gridiron at the Lockhart Street Bowl.
• The Tioga boys host SVEC on the pitch for their second game in as many days.
• The Waverly girls are in action at the Hall of Fame Soccer Tournament. Day 1 features a game against Central Valley Academy in Ilion, N.Y.
SATURDAY (10)
• Tioga opens defense of its three straight Class D football state titles at Waverly against Class B Maryvale of Section VI. Game time is 3 p.m.
• Waverly opens defense of its Class C football state titles against Clymer-Sherman-Panama, which lost to Tioga in the Class D semis last year. Game time is 6 p.m.
• Athens takes on NTL Large School rival Canton on Miller A. Moyer Field in a matinee affair. Game time is 1 p.m.
• Waverly hosts its annual Swimming & Diving Invitational.
• Athens hosts NP-Mansfield in an early-morning NTL girls soccer match.
• Athens and Waverly will be in action at the Oneonta Forbes Cross Country Invitational.
• The Athens boys host Horseheads in a non-league soccer match.
• Athens and Sayre are in action at the annual Williamson Volleyball Tournament.
• Tioga volleyball opens its 2024 season at the Corning Tournament.
• Waverly is in action at the Hall of Fame Girls Soccer Tournament. Day 2 features a game at Shaker Heights.
