Valley Sports Report
MARATHON — Marathon scored eight goals in the first half on its way to a 10-0 season-opening win over Tioga here Tuesday afternoon in IAC boys soccer action.
“It was a tough season opener tonight,” said Tioga coach Adam Layman. “We went into the game knowing Marathon’s abilities and played a decent game of soccer.
“Having some new faces and running a different line than last year, it will take us a little time to settle in,” he noted.
“We will continue to work on our basics and get settled into our roles,” added Layman.
Marathon, which was 14-2-1 last year, had a 22-1 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.
Davie VanDusen recorded 10 saves in net for the Tigers before leaving the game with an injury with 25 minutes remaining to play.
Tioga returns to action Thursday in its home opener against Southern Cayuga at Haggerty Field. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
