ATHENS — Senior Micaiah Fitch scored the game’s lone goal about 10 minutes into the game, and Wellsboro’s defense kept Athens off the board in a 1-0 win here Tuesday afternoon in NTL boys soccer action at Alumni Stadium.
“We played a great game,” said Athens coach Jake Lezak. “One mistake in the first half led to a goal.
“The boys worked very hard and are implementing their training,” he noted.
“We ask that they give their best every day, work together and allow us to coach them,” added Lezak. “These are things they are doing.”
Fitch drove a laser shot from 20 yards out just inside the near post with 30:12 remaining in the first half, and the Hornets defense made the lead stand.
Athens’ best chance to score came midway through the first half when Ryan Thompson hit a shot from 40 yards out on the right hash, and Wellsboro keeper Camden Tom made a diving stop at the far post.
Wellsboro had a 7-1 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore Zach Fisher recorded four saves in net for the Wildcats.
Athens, now 1-2 overall and 1-1 in NTL play, returns to action Wednesday at Williamson.
