ONEONTA — Oneonta scored four first-half goals on its way to a 7-1 win over Waverly here Monday afternoon in STAC boys soccer action.

Throughout the game we made a lot of errors and struggled to recover,” said Waverly first-year coach Jon Rankin. “We had some glimpses of success and good play, but it was overshadowed by panic and rushed play.

“We were playing well until Porter Daddona got hurt and had to come off the field,” he noted. “That was a very tough moment for us coaches and for the team.

“Trevor Allen stepped up to fill in on defense and did a great job fighting for the ball and won most of them.

“Aiden Doherty had a phenomenal game recording 18 saves for us — most of them stretching out for them,” added Rankin.

Matthew Rubin led the way for the Yellowjackets with four goals and an assist, while Luca Rubin provided four assists in the win.

Darren Rose, Andrew Brechner and Nikolas Iannelli each had goals, and Aiden Wamsley added an assist.

Waverly’s lone goal was an own-goal of a throw-in. The Oneonta scorebook credited 8th-grader Briaden Judson with the goal.

Oneonta had an 18-2 advantage in shots-on-goal, and an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Aiden Doherty recorded 11 saves in net for the Wolverines.

Waverly, now 1-1, returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Susquehanna Valley.
