“This was a great first home game for us,” said Waverly coach Tara Hogan.

“Our passing was good and there was better movement off the ball,” she noted. “We did a lot of practice on finding our outside players (Monday) and the players did a fantastic job translating that into the game.

“Now, we just need to work on finding the back of the net when we have the chance — and we have been given chances,” added Hogan.

Sophomore Mackenzie Olmsted, off a feed from senior Kiley Stillman scored 7 1/2 minutes into the game, but the Yellowjackets defense stiffened, and Waverly held a 1-0 lead at the halftime intermission.

“By simply moving Makenzie Olmsted up the field, we have a totally different pace,” said Hogan. “She brings the energy we need to have on offense, but we can’t quite afford to always move her off the back line.”

Senior Loralye Anthony, assisted by freshman Gianna Soprano, scored with 15 minutes left in the contest to extend the lead to 3-0.

Stillman, off an assist from senior Addison Westbrook, scored about five minutes later to provide the final margin.

Waverly had a 21-0 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.

“Oneonta’s goalie did a great job keeping them in the game,” Hogan said.

Hogan sang the praises of several of her players after the game.

“Kendall Rockwell saw some solid time as the center-defender, and did a great job holding the line with Lilly Boothby-Schoonover.

“Maci Wheeler is really proving that she can still have a big role in feeding our forwards, even though she has been locked in as sweeper,” noted Hogan.

“Our forwards worked hard and worked well together,” added Hogan. “Maddie Cron and Addison Westbrook did a fantastic job as our outside midfielders this game.”

Junior Claire Clonch played the entire game in net for Waverly, but not see a shot fired on goal.
