NTL VOLLEYBALL: ATHENS PLACES SECOND AT DALLAS TOURNAMENT; DROPS THREE-SET THRILLER IN FINALS (2024-09-14)

DALLAS, Pa. — Athens pulled off an upset in the semifinals, then dropped a three-set thriller to Tunkhannock in the championship match of the Dallas Volleyball Tournament here Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats went 4-2 in Pool A to take second place, and earn a trip to bracket play.

Athens lost to Dallas by scores of 25-13, and 25-14, but bounced back to beat Greater Nanticoke 25-14 and 25-21.

The Wildcats finished off pool play with a sweep of Elk Lake by scores of 25-16 and 25-16.

In the semifinals, Athens steamrolled Pool B winner Dunmore, 25-9, to advance into the finals against Tunkhannock, which knocked off Pool A winner Dallas.

In the finals, the Tigers won the opening set 25-18, but the Wildcats rallied to win the second set, 27-25.

Tunkhannock claimed the title with a 15-11 win in the decisive third set.

Athens returns to action Thursday when it hosts North Penn-Liberty.
