STAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: WAVERLY PULLS OUT 53-47 WIN OVER CHENANGO FORKS; IMPROVES TO 9-0 (2025-01-07)

BINGHAMTON — Waverly used balanced scoring to pull out a hard-fought road win, topping Chenango Forks, 53-47, here Tuesday night in STAC Central Division girls basketball action.
Junior Kaitlyn Sutton, who sat out last season after transferring in from Sayre, made her biggest mark to dat for the Wolverines with a season-high 16 points, including a trio of 3-pointers.
Six different Wolverines put their name in the scoring column in the first quarter, led by four points from sophomore Emma Richards-Randall and a 3-pointer by sophomore Ryleigh Judson as the two teams played to a 14-14 tie.
Sutton canned a 3-pointer and scored five points in the second quarter, and senior Addison Westbrook added four points in an 11-8 spurt that put Waverly up 25-22 at the half.
Sutton hit another 3-pointer and scored four points in the third quarter, and freshman Maci Wheeler also had four points to spark a 16-13 advantage in the stanza that gave the Wolverines a 41-35 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
Sutton knocked down her third 3-pointer and scored five points in the fourth quarter, junior Brilynn Belles added four points, including a pair of free throws, and freshman Kendall Rockwell converted an old-fashion three-point play to nail down the win.
The Wolverines didn't do themselves any favors from the free throw line, making just 3 of 9 attempts in the fourth quarter, and 11 of 29 in the contest.
Westbrook added 10 points for the Wolverines, while Wheeler scored seven, Belles had six points, Judson had five points, and Richards-Randall chipped in with four.
Chenango Forks' all-stater Maggie Warpus led all scorers with 23 points.
Waverly, now 9-0, returns to action Monday at Ithaca.
