ELMIRA — Waverly raced out to a double-digit lead in the first four minutes of the game, and cruised to a 68-44 win over Whitney Point here Saturday afternoon in non-league boys basketball action.
"Ever since the loss to Sayre on their home floor, we’ve played with more of a chip on our shoulder," said Waverly coach Lou Judson. "Today, although it wasn’t always aesthetically pleasing, we did what we needed to do.
"There were a lot of positives to take from today’s game," noted Judson. "We executed better at times in the half-court, but did struggle to shoot the three.
"However, one consistent all season has been our effor," he added. "We now get into the tough part of our schedule and I’m looking forward to seeing our players and team take the next step."
Junior Hogan Shaw and sophomore Ben Shaw each knocked down 3-pointers, and scored five points apiece in the first quarter, while senior Fletcher Good scored four points, and junior Ronin Ault canned a 3-pointer to fuel a 19-3 first-quarter blitz that started with a 12-2 run in first four minutes of the game.
Hogan Shaw scored nine points in the second quarter, including another 3-pointer, but Whitney Point outscored Waverly, 16-15, to close the gap34-19 at the halftime intermission.
Seven different Wolverines put their name in the scoring column in the third in a 16-9 run that extended the lead to 50-28 heading into the final eight minutes.
Hogan Shaw and Ben Shaw combined for 10 points in the fourth quarter, and the Wolverines made 6 of 7 free throws, led by senior Jack Cheresnowsky, who was 4-for-4, down the stretch to sew up the win.
Hogan Shaw led Waverly with 20 points, five rebounds, and three steals, while Good scored 10 pints, Ben Shaw had nine points, three assists, and three steals, and Ault had seven points and five rebounds.
Junior Porter Daddona had four points, seven rebounds, and two blocked shots, while freshman Jack Pipher had four points and six rebounds, Cheresnowsky had four points and three rebounds, and junior Carter Davies added four points.
Waverly, now 7-3, hosts state-ranked Seton Catholic Tuesday.
