STAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: WAVERLY HOLDS OFF ITHACA FOR 10TH STRAIGHT WIN TO START SEASON (2025-01-13)

ITHACA — Waverly built an 11-point halftime lead, and held on for a 46-42 win over Ithaca here Monday night in non-divisional STAC girls basketball action.
The win was the 10th in a row for the Wolverines to start the season.
Junior Kaitlyn Sutton scored four points in the first quarter to help Waverly to a 6-4 lead in a low-scoring opening stanza.
Senior Addison Westbrook six points in the second quarter, while freshman Lauryn Welles canned a 3-pointer, and sophomore Ryleigh Judson converted an old-fashion three-point play to fuel an 18-9 run to give the Wolverines a 24-13 lead at the halftime intermission.
The Wolverines were 9-for-9 from the free-throw line in the second quarter, led by Westbrook, who was 4-for-4, and sophomore Mackenzie Olmsted and freshman Maci Wheeler, who were both 2-for-2.
Mackenzie Olmsted scored four points in the third quarter, but the Little Red closed the gap with a 14-9 to make it 33-27 heading into the final eight minutes.
Judson knocked down a 3-pointer, and scored eight points in the fourth quarter to help Waverly preserve the win.
Judson led a balanced Waverly attack with 12 points, while Olmsted scored eight points, Westbrook, and Sutton added seven points apiece, and Welles chipped in with five points.
Samantha O'Connor led Ithaca with 20 points.
Waverly hosts Seton Catholic Wednesday.
