Valley Sports ReportATHENS — Gage Marmor helped Athens to a fast start on its way to a 37-24 win over Wellsboro here Thursday night in NTL Large School Division junior varsity boys basketball action.
Marmor knocked down a 3-pointer early and scored seven points in the first quarter to help the Wildcats to a 13-6 lead after the opening stanza.
Luke Schultz scored four points in the second quarter to help Athens maintain its lead as both teams scored 10 points. Athens led 23-16 at the halftime break.
Defense ruled the second half.
Marmor scored five points in the third quarter, including a 3-pointer, and Athens upped its lead with a 9-7 advantage to take a 32-23 lead into the final seven minutes.
The Wildcats made just 3 of 8 free throws in the fourth quarter, but it was more than enough as they held the Hornets to just 1 point.
Marmor led Athens with 15 points, while Schultz scored 10 points, and Kam Wheeler added seven points.
Athens, now 10-3, returns to action Wednesday when it hosts Canton.
