BINGHAMTON — A cold-shooting third quarter proved costly for Waverly in a 44-38 loss to Chenango Forks here Tuesday night in STAC Central Division boys basketball action.
The Wolverines were without 6-3 junior Porter Daddona.
"Going on the road and playing Chenango Forks at their place is never easy, doing it missing your leading rebounder and second leading scorer is even more challenging," said Waverly coach Lou Judson.
"We played solid defense and defended well enough to win tonight," he noted. "However, we went through too many scoring droughts. We were out of sync all night at the offensive end.
"We have 3 important games remaining, all at home with sectional seeding implications," added Judson.
Junior Ronin Ault knocked down a 3-pointer in the first quarter to help the Wolverines to a 7-4 lead after the first eight minutes.
Sophomore Ben Shaw scored seven points, including an old-fashion three-point play, in the second quarter as Waverly outscored Forks, 12-11, to take a 19-15 at the half.
Forks took control in the third quarter with a 17-5 run to take a 32-24 lead into the final eight minutes.
Hogan Shaw scored seven points in the fourth quarter, and Waverly made 8 of 10 free throws, but the Blue Devils were able to hold on, despite making just 4 of 9 attempts from the charity stripe.
Hogan Shaw led Waverly with 12 points, five rebounds and two steals, while Ben Shaw had nine points and three boards, and senior Fletcher Good had eight points and eight rebounds.
Ault added five points, including Waverly's only 3-pointer of the game, and seven rebounds, while senior Jack Cheresnowsky hauled down five rebounds, and junior Carter Davies chipped in with three boards.
Waverly, now 9-8, will host divisional rival Owego Saturday.
