ELMIRA — Waverly grad Mackenzie LaForest, a freshman at D'Youville, finished third at the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Conference Region 1 Championships Sunday afternoon at Elmira College to punch her ticket to Nationals.
LaForest, the fifth seed at 207 pounds, scored a 10-0 technical fall in 29 seconds over Western New England's fourth-seeded Samantha Rankin in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, top-seeded Madeline Hodges of Sacred Heart won by technical fall over LaForest in 2:39.
LaForest bounced back in the consolation semifinals with a pin of Alfred State's Hannah Grawn in 3:39.
In the third-place match, LaForest pinned third-seeded Talisha Lewis of Felician in 5:44.
LaForest, now 9-9 on the season, returns to action at the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships held March 7-8 in Coralville, Iowa.
