YOUTH BASKETBALL: NTL TOURNAMENT TO BE PLAYED SATURDAY IN MEMORY OF LONGTIME OFFICIAL TIM SHAW (2025-03-07)

Valley Sports Report
TOWANDA — The NTL Youth Boys Basketball League will have its season-ending tournament here Saturday, and will be held in honor of the memory of longtime PIAA official Tim Shaw.

Fourth-, 5th- and 6th-grade teams from Athens, NEB, Troy, Grace Christian Academy, St Agnes, Wyalusing, Towanda, and Waverly will play in both gyms at Towanda High School, the Towanda Elementary gym, and the St Agnes gym. Games begin at 9 a.m.

Tim Shaw passed away in December after a brave fight against cancer. He leaves behind his wife Jennifer, and three children Patrick, Lizzie, and Molly.

Shaw was a longtime PIAA official and friend to many sports enthusiasts. He was certified to officiate basketball, football, baseball, softball, and volleyball. In addition to the high school level, he officiated countless youth sports, including this tournament for many years.

"Tim was always willing to help so our area youth could play games," said a tournament spokesperson. "It would be fair to say that Tim officiated more games, especially youth games, than any other person in the NTL in the past two decades."

The NTL East Chapter of Officials, which includes many members of Shaw's family and friends, is going to donate their time and talents to officiate the tournament for free on Saturday.

The NTL Youth Boys Basketball League has graciously agreed to take the money that would be used toward officials’ fees and make a donation to the "Shaw Education Fund." This is an account that has been set up at the Guthrie Community Credit Union to help with Tim and Jen’s children’s education.

Donations will be accepted at the game sites Saturday. In addition, if interested checks for the "Shaw Education Fund" can be sent to Guthrie FCU, 104 N. Elmer St., Sayre, PA 18840.
