SAYRE — Early base on balls and late miscues proved costly in Sayre's 11-8 loss to Williamson here on a chilly Monday afternoon in NTL Small School baseball action at Riverfront Park.
Sayre pitchers issued six walks in the first 2 1/3 innings as the Warriors built a 7-2 lead.
Williamson scored three runs without a hit in the top of the first inning on the benefit of a dropped third strike, three walks, and two hits batsmen.
Sayre answered with a run in the home half of the first on an RBI double by junior Karter Green.
The Warriors took advantage of two more base on balls, and their first three hits to add two more runs in the top of the second inning to take a 5-1 lead.
Freshman Riley McGaughey stroked a single — his varsity hit — to lead off the bottom of the second. He scored with a steal of home on the back end of a double steal with senior Jamier Kole to close the gap to 5-2.
Williamson plated two more runs in the top of the third inning with a lead-off single, a walk and two errors to up its lead to 7-2.
Senior Nick Pellicano led off the bottom of the second, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Karter Green, who later scored on an error to close the gap to 7-4.
Freshman Tucker Green led off the bottom of the fourth inning with his first varsity hit — a single to left field, but was wiped off the base paths via a fielder's choice off the bat of Kole, who later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Pellicano to make it 7-5.
Williamson turned a pair of Sayre errors into a run in the top of the sixth inning to take an 8-5 lead.
The Warriors took advantage of a pair of Sayre errors to plate three runs to increase their lead to 11-5. The Redskins committed six errors in all.
Pellicano worked a walk to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning, and Karter Green followed with a single into left field to put runners on first and third.
Sophomore Shaine Strickland plated the first run of the inning with an RBI single, and senior David Hall made it 11-7 with an RBI groundout.
With two outs senior Mikey Griffith singled to left field to provide the final margin.
Karter Green had three hits, including a double, scored two runs, and drove in two runs to pace Sayre's 10-hit attack, while Strickland singled twice, stole two bases, scored one run, and knocked in one run, and McGaughey singled twice and scored one run.
Pellicano singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run for the Redskins, while Griffin singled and had one RBI, Tucker Green added a single, Kole scored two runs and stole two bases, and Hall had one RBI.
Strickland had the best turn on the mound for the Redskins, allowing four unearned runs on three hits, while striking out eight and walked none in 4 2/3 innings of relief.
Sayre, now 1-1, returns to action Saturday at Millville at 2 p.m.
