Valley Sports ReportWELLSBORO — Wellsboro scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings to salt away an 8-3 win over Sayre here Saturday afternoon in NTL softball action.
The Redskins were without three starters, and lost a fourth to injury during the game.
The Redskins opened the game with two runs in the top of the first.
Senior Raegan Parrish and freshman McKenna Parrish work walks to start the game, and junior Rylee Lantz singled to load the bases. Senior Abbie McGaughey stroked a two-run single to left field to make it 2-0, but the next two Redskins struck out to end the inning.
Wellsboro answered with three runs — on a three-run home by Teagan Novinger — in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-2 lead.
The Redskins tied the game in the top of the third inning, but left the bases loaded.
McKenna Parrish and Lantz led off the inning with singles, and freshman Emily Strickland tied the game with a one-out RBI single. After a walk to freshman Olivia Homer, the next two batters struck out to end the inning.
The Hornets took the lead, at 4-3, in the home half of the inning with an unearned run.
Raegan Parrish belted a one-out triple in the top of the fourth inning, but was stranded there.
Wellsboro added two runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Paige Logsdon and an RBI groundout off the bat of Novinger to take a 6-3 lead.
Senior Emily Chilson singled, and freshman Paige Secrist walked to lead off the top of the sixth, but neither advanced the remainder of the inning.
Wellsboro padded its lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with a pair of runs.
Lantz singled twice and McGaughey singled and drove in two runs to pace Sayre's eight-hit attack, while Strickland singled and knocked in a run, and Raegan Parrish singled and scored one run.
McKenna Parrish, Chilson and Secrist each added a single for the Redskins.
Raegan Parrish allowed four earned runs on five hits in six inning, while striking out four and walking four.
Sayre, now 1-4, returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Cowanesque Valley.
