WAVERLY — Waverly's first doubles team of junior Nate McEwen and senior Zach Moran notched the Wolverines' lone win in a 6-1 setback to Chenango Valley here Monday afternoon in their STAC tennis season opener.
"I expect us to improve, and see better results as the season progresses," said Waverly coach Ron Chamberlain.
McEwen and Moran pulled out a three-set win over CV's Kayden Stalker and Miles Garnar, who won the first set, 6-3.
McEwen and Moran settled in after the first set and won the next two by scores of 6-2 and 6-0.
In other doubles action, CV's No. 2 doubles team of Ethan Randall and Jack Stiles topped Waverly sophomore Kearstin Stout and freshman Rylie Witman, 6-1 and 6-2; and the SV duo of Anthony Bee and Sterling Terrell topped Waverly freshmen Scott Muster and Kamden Sorensen, 6-2 and 6-1.
Waverly junior Logan Roskow, a first-year play, dropped the No. 1 singles match by scored off 6-1, 7-6 (7-4 in tiebreaker) to Owen Stafford.
In other singles action, Waverly junior Finn Williams dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to CV's Arin Miller in second-singles action. Senior Savannah Savercool dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to CV's Kainoa-Tang-Chung, and freshman Owen Fassett was swept, 6-0 and 6-0, by CV's Tantawat Jampar.
Waverly hosts Chenango Forks Wednesday.
