Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Eighth-grader Taylin Gonzalez tossed a 1-hitter, and 7th-grader Paige Bubniak led the Waverly offense in a 15-2 win over Seton Catholic here Monday afternoon in STAC Central Division softball action.
"Taylin Gonzalez pitched a complete game," said Waverly coach Brent Doane. "She was nervous in her first varsity start, but got the job done.
"I was pleased with our defense, we only had one error," he noted. "Unfortunately, it led to two unearned runs.
"Our offense was slow to get going, but Paige Bunniak and Brinn Cooney had real nice nights at the plate," added Doane.
Senior Brinn Cooney delivered the big hit in the bottom of the fourth inning to cap Waverly's four-run rally to break a scoreless tie.
After the Saints scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning, Waverly took advantage of three big Seton Catholic errors, and rapped out eight hits, including two singles by senior Makayla Esau, in a nine-run rally to up its lead to 13-2.
Junior Maddie Cron's two-RBI single in the sixth inning provided the final margin.
Gonzalez allowed two unearned runs on one hit, while striking out six and walking six to earn the win.
Bubniak singled three times, scored three runs, and had three RBI, while senior Brinn Cooney had three hits, including a double, scored two runs, and drove in two runs, and Esau singled three times and scored two runs to pace Waverly's 18-hit attack.
Sophomore Lecksie Douglas singled twice, scored two runs, and had two RBI in the win, while Cron and sophomore Hannah Carpenter each singled twice and scored one run, and drove in two runs, and Gonzalez singled twice and scored one run.
Junior Delaney Wheeler singled and scored one run, and had two RBI for the Wolverines, and senior Meghan Apgar scored two runs and drove in one run.
Waverly, now 3-0, returns to action Wednesday at Oneonta.
