SAYRE — Sayre kept it close early, but North Penn-Liberty pulled away for a 17-3 five-inning win here Friday afternoon in NTL softball action.
The Mountaineers scored four runs in the top of the first inning, but the Redskins closed the gap by the end of the second inning.
North Penn-Liberty rapped out three hits, and took advantage of a pair of Sayre errors to take a quick 4-0 lead, but Sayre junior Olivia Thompson belted a lead-off home run to center field in the home half of the inning to make it 4-1.
With two outs in the bottom of the second inning, senior Emily Chilson and sophomore Zoey Ward rapped out back-to-back singles.
Sayre took advantage of an NP-L error to score the first run in the rally, and Thompson stroked an RBI single up the middle to trim the deficit to 4-3.
The Redskins did not have another hit in the contest.
NP-L, meanwhile, scored three runs in the third inning to take a 7-3 lead, then plated six runs in the fourth inning, and four more in the fifth to close out the game via the 10-run rule.
Thompson homered and singled, scored one run, and had two RBI to pace Sayre's offense, while Chilson and Ward each singled and scored one run.
Sayre, now 2-9, returns to action Tuesday at Williamson.
