WAVERLY — Waverly junior Hogan Shaw was recently selected to the New York State Class B all-state boys basketball team, earning a fifth-team nod from the New York State Sportswriters Association.
A dynamic 3-point shooter, Shaw knocked down a school-record 68 3-pointers this season. He averaged 16.5 points, 3 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 2.6 steals per game. He shot 37 percent from 3-point range.
"It’s an outstanding honor and one that is well-deserved," said Waverly coach Lou Judson.
"Hogan has become one of the best pure shooters in our area and continues to improve each season," noted Judson. "His work ethic and competitiveness are two qualities that really embody Hogan as a student-athlete.
"However his best attribute is his overall intelligence of the game," said Judson. "He has one of the highest basketball IQ’s I’ve ever coached. He’s like having a coach on the floor.
"This past season he set a school record for the most 3-point field goals in a season.
"His fifth-team All-State selection is the third best at Waverly in the last 25 years — both Scotty Woodring and Joey Tomasso were first-team selections," added Judson. "We look forward to great things out of Hogan in his senior year."
